Understanding The Importance Of Cleanings & X-Rays

Seeing Dr. Kelly for regular six-month teeth cleanings and x-rays is one of the most important parts of preserving your oral health. There are a few reasons you should come to Delafield Family Dental every six months for an appointment.

First, teeth cleanings are a great way to remove plaque and tartar that cause cavities and gum disease. We use special tools to get rid of more plaque and tartar than you can on your own, even with an electric toothbrush. This keeps your mouth healthy and your smile looking bright.

Routine appointments also allow us to get a good look at your teeth every six months and check for signs of common oral health issues like gum disease, tooth decay, and teeth grinding. We can also check for signs of oral cancer to make sure that your mouth is healthy.

Yearly x-rays give us the opportunity to take a look at the parts of your mouth that are not visible with a visual exam alone. X-ray images will show signs of gum disease, hidden decay and more, so we can ensure that your mouth is totally healthy.

Cavities & Fillings

Cavities aren’t fun, but they’re a normal part of life. Early detection and treatment are your best friends in avoiding costly dental work in the future. At your six month check-up, Dr. Michelle Kelly will look for signs of cavities so that we can isolate tooth decay before it turns into a bigger problem.

What Causes Cavities And How Can They Be Prevented?

Cavities are caused by a buildup of oral bacteria in the mouth. When these bacteria feed on the sugar and starches in food, they excrete a strong acid which slowly damages the hard, outer enamel layer of your teeth.

If you don’t brush or floss properly, this acid will continue to eat away at your enamel, eventually causing a hole in the tooth (also known as a cavity), which must be filled. If you don’t get a filling in time, the cavity will get worse and the tooth can become infected, requiring a root canal and a dental crown. By minimizing the amount of sugar in your diet, avoiding sugary beverages and foods, brushing twice a day and flossing once per day, you can minimize your risk of cavities.

Periodontal Dentistry

Bacteria and dental plaque can cause inflammation of your gums that is difficult to detect without the trained eye of a dentist. Dr. Michelle Kelly will assess your gums and if periodontitis (an advanced form of gum disease) is discovered, she may recommend scaling and root planing. This process, known also as a deep cleaning, removes bacteria below the gum line to reduce or eliminate symptoms of gum disease.

What Causes Periodontal Disease, And How Can I Avoid It?

Periodontal (gum) disease is caused by poor oral hygiene, though genetic factors can also contribute. If you do not floss and brush properly, bacteria and plaque will build up between your gums and your teeth, forming tartar. The bacteria in tartar will then start to attack your gums, causing inflammation, irritation, swelling, and other unpleasant symptoms.

To avoid periodontal disease, it is important to brush and floss properly. There is no substitute for regular flossing, which is the best way to remove food, plaque and bacteria from between your teeth and gums.

Root Canals

You might be surprised to know that, with modern dentistry, root canals are practically pain-free. Root canals become necessary when the soft, inner area of the the tooth (known as the pulp) becomes infected. Dr. Michelle Kelly, who practices endodontic dentistry, can assess your health and personalize a treatment plan to address the pain caused by infected pulp. Stop suffering from toothaches, and call us today at (262) 646-4188 for your consultation.

What Are The Signs I Need A Root Canal?

A root canal is required if your tooth becomes infected. Infection occurs when the soft “pulp” inside your tooth is exposed to oral bacteria due to a serious cavity or an oral injury that cracks your tooth.

The most common sign that you may need a root canal is a serious, throbbing toothache that does not go away. The inside of your tooth is filled with nerves, so the infection will cause a lot of pain and discomfort.

Other signs you may need a root canal include discoloration of your tooth, severe sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, and the swelling and tenderness of the nearby gums. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact Delafield Family Dental for an emergency appointment right away.

Crown and Bridge

Crowns are often used to restore the look and function of a tooth after a root canal or to fix a weak or damaged tooth. A bridge is a fixed prosthetic that replaces one or more missing teeth. Dr. Michelle Kelly will fit you with a crown or bridge, depending on your needs, to keep your smile looking naturally beautiful.

Dentures

We offer various types of dentures to restore your smile. Whether you’re looking for full or partial dentures, or an implant-supported denture, Delafield Family Dental can help you achieve the fit, feel and function you desire. When you meet with Dr. Michelle Kelly, she’ll help you choose a denture solution that will keep you smiling for years to come.
