Delafield Implant Dentistry
Dental implants make it possible for patients suffering from tooth loss to replace missing teeth permanently. If you’ve lost one or more teeth in Hartford, Mukwonago, Eagle, or Delafield, dental implants from Dr. Kelly at Delafield Family Dental may be right for you. With implants, you can protect your mouth from the harmful effects of tooth loss, such as bone resorption and shifting of the teeth.
What Is A Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small piece of titanium that is shaped like a rod or a screw. Once it has been surgically implanted into your gum and jaw, it bonds with the surrounding tissue permanently and functions as an artificial root. Then, a dental restoration like a dental crown, bridge, or denture can be attached to the implant, restoring your smile permanently.
Understanding The Dental Implant Placement Process
At your first appointment, your mouth will be cleaned and numbed. Then, Dr. Kelly will create a small opening in your gum and jaw bone, and place the dental implant in the proper position, as determined your personalized treatment plan. Once this is complete, the area will be cleaned and sutured shut.
Next, your gums will heal for about 3-6 months while your implant goes through the “osseointegration” process. Osseointegration is the process by which the implant bonds permanently with your jaw bone before your dental restoration can be placed.
While you heal, Dr. Kelly will craft your custom dental restoration, such as a bridge, crown, or denture. After the healing and osseointegration process is complete, you’ll come in for your last appointment and your dental restoration will be permanently attached.
Single Tooth Dental Implants
Single-tooth dental implants use a porcelain crown to restore one missing tooth and these are the most common type of dental implant. In fact, they are so common that many dentists use the term “dental implant” to refer to a single-tooth dental implant. Single-tooth dental implants are a great alternative to traditional partial dentures or dental bridges if you are missing a single tooth.
Full Arch Restorations
If you are missing most or all of your natural teeth, the best option for restoring your smile is a full-arch restoration. The most common type of full-arch restoration is an implant-supported denture. Rather than resting directly on your gums, an implant-supported denture snaps into a series of dental implants, providing a stronger hold and strengthening your jaw bone.
Other options for full arch restorations include “permanent dentures” such as All-On-Four. This is a type of dental bridge that is built to attach permanently to a set of 4 dental implants. All-On-Four and similar treatments do not need to be removed, and they look and feel completely natural, making them a convenient way to restore your smile.
